Fusion Time!
What is Fusion?
Fusion is pretty literal. It's two Gems (sometimes more) fusing their physical forms together, to create a new person! The Fusion has all the general memories of the two parties, all of their skills, and a fun mix of their personality and physical traits that leads to them being their own, completely unique person.
How does that even work?
The two characters have to be in sync, mentally and physically - this usually means having the same goal/s that they wish to achieve as a fusion, or just sharing a good mood or similar idea. Physical synchronization is usually achieved by dance: however, it's possible for it to happen with just raw physical contact, if the mental sync is sufficiently strong.
The Fusion has access to all of the fusers' skills and memories (except where a person may choose to hide them), and is much more than the sum of their parts. However, they are still made from two (or sometimes more) people; and so if the fusers fall back out of sync - be it from disagreement, shock, panic or surprise - then the fusion may simply fall apart, and all fusers get spat out very unceremoniously.
Wouldn't this only apply to Gems from Steven Universe?
NOPE. Word of ModMatt says that Hecatites from the Questing Country/Junkworld universe are compatible with Gems, so those will be capable of fusing with Bismuth (and by extension, any other Gems that may be present), and with the nature of Liminal Space being ~Weird as Shit~ probably any other Mineral-based life form might well be able to fuse too, though I'd have to double-check with Matt.
So how big are we talking?
A Fusion's size relates directly to the state of the character's relationship - any kind, not just romantic. The more healthy, genuine and loving the characters' relationship is, the smaller the fusion is; but the smallest possible size is both parties standing on each other's shoulders.
Conversely, the more unhealthy or toxic a character's relationship is, the larger their fusion becomes; and the more monster-like. It's also harder to maintain the fusion, and is more likely to fall apart due to the difficulty in staying synced with someone you hate or fear. These fusions can be as large as Diamonds, but in Synodiporia the size cap is around 50 feet tall.
How do skills work when characters are fused?
A Fusion will have access to all Liminal, Psychic, Hybrid and Combo skills that the two characters have; and, when possible, would have the better version (e.g. Liminal Manipulation II instead of I, so long as one fuser actually has Liminal Manipulation II). They also automatically receive Combo Power if using any Combo skills.
The exception to this is if a skill's power is determined by the number of skills (e.g. Liminal Bubble's diameter); in which case, it is determined by the number of unique skills known. So if both had Investigator Mind Reading, that would count as one; but if one had 19 skills and the other had 17, 16 of which were the same & 1 that was different, the fusion would use it like they had 20.
As well, with the exception of form changes (since their form is Fusion), a Fusion would have access to all Jaunt and other assorted skills that the characters possess. However, they can still use shapeshifting related to their base forms (such as Gem or Hecatite shapeshifting).
A Fusion would not have access to the characters' Favour skills. Their Marks are also not visible, but are still present and detectable. The only exception is if a character has the appropriate Interdisciplinary Mark.
How would roleplaying this work?
...lemme get back to you on that.

Current (tentative) working list:
Rose Quartz: Ammolite
Blue Diamond: Labradorite
Yukino Mayuzumi: Mystic Topaz
Kanji Tatsumi: Crazy Lace Agate (either blue or purple, depending on Kanji's form)
Mamoru Chiba: Amber(?)
Yosuke Hanamura: Fire Agate

Gem Form Type: Hecatite
Gem/Appearance: Yukino is an Ametrine! Somehow, she still keeps the permed hair.
What's Brought to the Table: A tough-talking Big Sister type who in her own canon acts as a combination of grizzled demon-fighting veteran (...at 20, yes) and
only sane party membervoice of reason, but who is nonetheless perfectly willing to throw down if necessary. Believes in the power of negotiation, but also has no fewer than three demon negotiation scenarios that involve beating the crap out of the demon in question, and at least one more involves scolding them into submission. Is in general fairly realistic about her strengths and weaknesses and will try to work within them accordingly. She does have a temper, but most of the time, she at least tries to keep it under control. On a less positive note, her Hecatite form brings low stamina and weaknesses to bludgeons and loud noises; whether a Fusion would be enough to mitigate those, I don't know.Anything else?: I can't think of anything else right at this moment, aside from maybe wondering about how skills would work.

Fusions are also typically much stronger than their individual components; she'll definitely be more resistant to sound/bludgeon attacks, since Bismuth doesn't need to worry about those at all, but it would probably still be a significant weakness. On the plus side, their confidence in their abilities is absolutely justified, and also? Throwing axes.
god this fusion would just be the Biggest Sister who will not hesitate whatsoever to Throw The Fuck Down and i love that?

Throwing axes sound fun.

Gem Form Type: Hecatite form, half-Hecatite dream body (not sure if relevant but Smoky Quartz exists, etc.)
Gem/Appearance:
What's Brought to the Table:
Kanji's creative, determined, wants to protect his friends; historically, he's been a team leader and a very hands-on melee combatant. More recently, he's been trending towards a communications role and wanting people to understand him or each other. He often fights with shields, tonfa/batons, or with ... whatever he can lay his hands on.
He's highly into his arts and crafts, is insanely good with a knitting needle, and absolutely adores cute nonsense of many kinds.
He's a big guy, something like 6'3" (he was six foot at 15 years old, so... yeah...) and his canon self is The Party Tank. He has somewhat of an affinity for electric and star/light themes. Incidentally, his mark is in pretty much the same spot as Bismuth's.
Anything else?: ...I have no idea when this might be a thing given that Kanji has ~issues~ with mystical bond nonsense. XD

Gem Form Type: Hecatite
Gem/Appearance: Golden Danburite Crystal
What's Brought to the Table: Mamoru carries himself like royalty and is a calm and relaxed person in general. He's smart and observant and rather mysterious when he wants to be. Near Usagi he's a total dork sometimes. He's also very protective.
Anything else?:
my job here is donen/a!no subject
Improv fighting is good! Bismuth can change her body to form weapons, so this would be a fantastic fighting combo, they can randomly create any weapon for the situation and rip up rocks or whatever out of the ground if they need it. EVERYTHING IS A WEAPON! And Bismuth is a blacksmith so I can see plenty of extremely creative options for them.

Gem Form Type: Hecatite
Gem/Appearance: Wulfenite (somehow he still keeps his headphones around his neck)
What's Brought to the Table: A very quirky and energetic teenager who wears his heart on a sleeve. Kind of really sensitive even if he tries to act like he's not. A total perv. Has a strong sense of justice.
Anything else?: currently idled

On the other hand, tho:
fire agateNO WAIT AMBERno subject
Also an absolute emotional mess. Bismuth cries at the sight of her friends crying; this fusion cries at the thought. Not very big for a fusion, but super super duper flirty, and would probably act on it if someone was their fuckin size.
I saw that his weapons are knives/kunai, so now I'm thinking their weapon might be a war hammer or a mace. Spiky hammer basically. Two of em.

Gem Form Type: Hecatite/Gorgon cross-species
Gem/Appearance: Moonstone! ....Sssssort of. 8D Alcuin has most of the traits of a gorgon with golden scales, but also many blue-moonstone inclusions - especially in the head area. Similar to this, but the skin is as gold as the tendrils and covered in fine scales, and the moonstone are much rounder cabochon style pieces, including rounded caps on the end of each tendril. There are also inclusions in his hands and on his three-toed feet, and studded in various places around his body.
What's Brought to the Table: Alcuin is incredibly smart and observant, dexterous and lithe. He is particularly good at drawing out the patterns in things and making deep - and often correct - conclusions about what he's seeing. He is exceptionally friendly and courteous and always focuses on helping others before himself, constantly seeking to improve himself for others' benefit. He has experience with twin daggers as a primary weapon, but also some rapier work, and dodgy unarmed street brawling as well as throwing weapons. He's good at climbing, and running, doesn't know how to swim unless he's in mermaid form. He loves to sing and play music. But more than anything else he is protective of his friends. He will do anything, including bodily intervention into a fatal situation, to protect them. He is strongly psychic and jaunt-skill focused. Being very good with people, he always attempts negotiation first, but isn't afraid to snap and snark with the best of them. Physically, he always thinks of himself with long hair. Not having long hair tends to make him actively upset.
Anything else?: N/A
Guess who has a second form
Gem Form Type: Hecatite form! White Opal! (which may confuse the heck out of Bismuth....)
Gem/Appearance: A slender, graceful Hecatite of smooth blue-white stone shot through with a rainbow of iridescent flash. Androgynous, hairless, sculpturally perfect. There's no change between the subtle flash of his skin and the substance of his eyes.
What's Brought to the Table: Other than the stuff in the last note... this is the one time when he does not have hair.
He threw a tantrum over it.Anything else?: Nope!

I feel like a good gem for Alcuin and Bismuth could be found in Paraiba Tourmaline or Rainbow Aura Quartz, especially when both of them get their amazing coloration by being bonded with metals.
I think physically it would make the fusion much more slender, and I love the idea of billowing hair but only in one form, haha. Their accuracy would be fucking unparalleled, and so focuses primarily on throwing weapons - maybe daggers or even spears, to differentiate from Yukino's fusion bearing throwing axes. They'd also probably end up much quieter than Bismuth alone is, but also end up with the ability to perfectly time their sass, and it is roasting.
Also, Bismuth would probably end up thinking of the White Opal form as their default, because the Moonstone/Gorgon one would feel incredibly weird, being partially organic. Aesthetically, the two fusions would be very similar from the head down; barring inclusions running in neat lines down their arms and legs, and the presence of scales. I think with Moonstone/Gorgon their hair would be the entire length of their torso, and braided with jewelry in moonstone, gold and whatever gem they end up as.

Gem Form Type: Hecatite form! Onyx! (but grafted with Ametrine on the right side to replace his arm.)
Gem/Appearance: Onyx stands at about 7' tall, mostly raw stone, like these. His hair is more like a polished crest or crown of onyx spikes rather than individual strands, banded with white on the front. The silver points of pilot implants shine on his temples, unusual for a Hecatite. But more unusual is his right arm. From shoulder to fingertips his arm is made of an entirely different stone - ametrine. Purple, with streaks of yellow, semi-translucent, it looks sleeker than the rest of him.
What's Brought to the Table: Shiro is the Ultimate Dad Friend. (If you are surprised at this point...) He protecc. He attac. He have many joke to crack. Very loyal, very protective, very self-sacrificing, a solid foundation for others to lean on, kind, thoughtful, always tries to help, not afraid to throw tf down and kill if necessary. He fights with his body - primarily his hands, but also incorporates acrobatics and kicks into his fighting style. (He is also trained in firearms and small bladed weapons, but rarely uses them anymore.) He is also well-known for his strength in tactics. He's a leader, even if he doesn't think of himself as one, a team player. Physically, he's broad shouldered and athletic, and prefers to sport a shorter hairstyle, but he doesn't really put a lot of effort into his looks. He's way more concerned that people are going to pity him or be afraid of him because of his prosthetic.
Anything else?: I'm really curious as to how the arm would translate? Like, for a gem, would that mean that his (her) gem was damaged, that he couldn't manifest that arm properly? Hm.

Secondly Bismuth is going to be super fucking weirded out by Shiro having a completely different kind of gemstone for his arm, because the implication to her would be that part of another Gem has been grafted onto him. Which is, canonically, a fucking horrifying concept. If she did fuse with him she would be super uncomfortable, and their fusion would probably be a bit larger than usual because of it - probably pushing 20 feet tall.
On the other hand, a successful fusion would probably spout a pun with literally every line of dialogue and I am okay with that. No weapons as a default, but when they are grossly overpowered in terms of a physical confrontation, especially with Bismuth's shapeshifting abilities, I really don't think they need one. Probably there's a very alarming tendency/urge to throw the FUCK down when anyone they care about is so much implied as to be in danger. Much much much shorter hair than Bismuth likes, but they can deal.
